Damoh SP DR Teniwar said the police received the information that some young girls were paraded naked to appease the rain god as part of local practice. The district collector said none of the villagers complained about the 'ritual'. The video shows the girls, some of them reported to be as young as five, walking together in a procession, followed by a group of women singing hymns. The procession stopped at every house in the village and the children collected foodgrains, which were later donated to the community kitchen of a local temple. Damoh district collector S Krishna Chaitanya said the girls' parents had consented to the ritual and had even participated in it.

The girl lives in a village that falls under the Chikasi police station in Hamirpur. The incident took place when the minor girl was alone at her residence. The girl's parents and siblings had gone to work in the agricultural fields. The police are trying to identify the person who brutally murdered the year-old girl inside her home. The girl's parents said that they learned about the incident when they returned home in the evening. On coming back, the girl's family saw her half-naked body lying in a pool of blood in the courtyard of the house.
